I seem to recall my professor forgetting how to deriving this. This is what I showed him:
y = arctan x
tan y = x
sec 2 y d y d x = 1
d y d x = 1 sec 2 y
Since tan y = x 1 and 1 2 + x 2 = 1 + x 2 , sec 2 y = ( 1 + x 2 1 ) 2 = 1 + x 2
d y d x = 1 1 + x 2
I believe this was his original intention:
d y d x = 1 sec 2 y
sec 2 y = 1 + tan 2 y
tan 2 y = x sec 2 y = 1 + x 2
d y d x = 1 1 + x 2
