Using the chain rule, we can treat cos(3x) as a variable and differentiate cos 2 ( 3 x ) in relation to cos(3x).
Chain rule: d y d x = d y d u d u d x
Let u = cos ( 3 x ) , then d u d x = - 3 sin ( 3 x )
d y d u = d d u u 2
= 2 u = 2 cos ( 3 x )
d y d x = 2 cos ( 3 x ) - 3 sin ( 3 x ) = - 6 sin ( 3 x ) cos ( 3 x )
