Note that x 2 2 x + 1 = ( x 1 ) 2 0, hence x 2 + 1 2 x and similarly y 2 + 1 2 y, hence indeed (very wastefully)
( 1 + 3 x 2 ) ( 1 + 3 y 2 ) = 9 x 2 y 2 + 3 x 2 + 3 y 2 + 1 9 + 3 x 2 + 3 y 2 + 1 = 3 ( x 2 + 1 ) + 3 ( y 2 + 1 ) + 3 6 x + 6 y + 3 > 6 ( x + y )
and you get a contraction factor of 1 2
