How do you simplify $\frac{3}{5y}+\frac{1}{5y}?$

Joy Compton

Expert

$\frac{3}{5y}+\frac{1}{5y}=\frac{4}{5y}$
Whenever denominators are common (i.e. they are equal) to add two fractions we just add their numerators, while denominator remains same.
As such $\frac{3}{5y}+\frac{1}{5y}=\frac{3+1}{5y}=\frac{4}{5y}$

Apply the fraction rule: $\frac{a}{c}+\frac{b}{c}=\frac{a+b}{c}$
$=\frac{3+1}{5y}$
Add the numbers: $3+1=4$
