The normal distribution has probability density function (pdf)
f ( x ) = 1 σ 2 π e ( x μ ) 2 2 σ 2 . The parameter μ is its mean and the parameter σ is its standard deviation.
If you have data from a random sample and compute the sample mean
x ¯ = x 1 + x 2 + x 3 + . . . + x n n and the sample standard deviation
s = ( x 1 x ¯ ) 2 + ( x 2 x ¯ ) 2 + . . . + ( x n x ¯ ) 2 n 1 , these will be good estimates for μ and σ when your sample size n is sufficient large.
