A contingency table is a table of counts from data that reflects the relationship between two or more given variables. The common name is called cross tabulation. It is found in one axis e.g. treatment method on horizontal axis is contingent on the variable found on other axis e.g. stop smoking on vertical axis.
It is also called two-way table, because the given table is presenting two variables: treatment and smoking, corresponding to columns and rows respectively.
