The sum of the infinite geometric series ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) 2 + ( x 1 ) 3 . . . i s . . . 1 3
for solving the problem let us assume that thesum is S
so, S = ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) 2 + ( x 1 ) 3 + ( x 1 ) 4 + = ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) [ ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) 2 + ( x 1 ) 3 + ] = ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) S
aswe know that, S = ( x 1 ) + ( x 1 ) 2 + ( x 1 ) 3 + ( x 1 ) 4 + = ( x 1 ) ( 1 + S ) S = ( x 1 ) ( 1 + S ) ( 1 )
in our problem, S = 1 3 ,
so, we put S = 1 3 in (1) to get,
1 3 = ( x 1 ) ( 1 + 1 3 )
1 3 = ( x 1 ) 4 3
1 = 4x - 4
4x = 1+4 = 5
x = 5 4
Answer:- x = 5 4
