We know that when a particle is initially located at y = 0 or when at origin, the displacement of the particle at time t is given by

y=v0t+12at2

To find how long the balloon is in the air, we ask the question: At what time is y equal to −6.0 m? So, plugging in y = -6 and a = -9.8, v0=0,

6=0+12(9.8)t2

t2=2(6.0m)(9.80  ms2) =1.22s2

t2=1.22s2

t=±1.1s

We only take the positive value of t which is 1.1 seconds.
