The principal quantum number determines how many shells there are (n). They are K, L, M, and N shells. It is denoted by n = 1, 2, 3 and so on.The form of the orbital is governed by azimuthal quantum number(l) (l). l = 0 to n. Consequently, l = 3 for f orbitals. Magnetic quantum number determines the number of subshells (m). m=−l to +l. If l = 3, there are -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, and 3 subshells. Therefore, f orbitals have seven subshells.
