A Chi-square distribution is the sum of squares of the standard normal deviates. The Chi-square test can be used for checking the association between categorical variables.
The assumptions for the chi-square test are:
1. The sampling method should be simple random sampling (normality).
2. The variables should be categorical in nature.
3. The expected value of the number of sample observations inn each level of the variable is at least 5.
The one standard deviation chi-square test is not robust to moderate violations of the normality assumption, unlike the z-tests and t-tests for one and two population means. It is used only when there is considerable evidence that the variable under consideration is normally distributed or nearly so.
