Step 1
1) The t-test for independent samples is used to test the means of two independent population. In this case, the two samples considered are derived from two independent population. The size of the two samples can be same or different.
The t-test for dependent samples is used to test the mean difference between the two dependent populations. Here, the two samples always have the same size and the data set is paired. In this case, the difference between each pairs are considered and the mean difference between the pairs is tested.
Step 2
2) Hypothetical example for a study that would be analysed using a t-test for independent samples:
The average blood pressure of adults who are residing in two different cities are tested.
The random sample of 60 adults are taken from city 1 and a random sample of 55 adults are taken from city 2, the sample means and the sample standard deviations of BP level for the two independent groups are calculated.
Now, the mean blood pressure level between the two populations can be compared using the above data.
Hypothetical example for a study that would be analysed using a t-test for dependent samples:
To test whether the Yoga helps in decreasing the mean weight in adults.
A random sample of 20 members are chosen and the weight of those 20 members are recorded before joining the Yoga classes. After 6 months, the same members’ weights are recorded. The difference between the weights in each of the members, the mean and the standard deviation of the differences are calculated.
Now, the mean difference between the weights before and after joining the Yoga classes can be tested using the above data.
