Let number is x.
Then
x 2 + ( x + 3 ) 2 = 29 x 2 + x 2 + 3 2 + 2 ( 3 x ) = 29 2 x 2 + 9 + 6 x 29 = 0 2 x 2 + 6 x 20 = 0 x 2 + 3 x 10 = 0 x 2 + 5 x 2 x 10 = 0 x ( x + 5 ) 2 ( x + 3 ) = 0 ( x 2 ) ( x + 5 ) = 0 x = 2  or  5
Then, ( 5 ) 2 + ( 5 + 3 ) 2 = 25 + 4 = 29
