Let f(x)=x, then
f(x)=limh0x+hxh=limh0x+hxh×x+h+xx+h+x
=limx0x+hxh(x+h+x)
=limh0hh(x+h+x)
=limh01(x+h+x)
=12x
In general, you can use the fact that if f(x)=xt ask, then f'(x)=txt1
Taking t=12, gives us that f(x)=12x12, which is the same as we obtained above.
Also, recall that d(cf(x)) dx =cdf(x) dx . Hence, you can pull out the constant and then differentiate it.

The Power Rule says that ddxxα=αxα1. Applying this to x=x12 gives
ddxx=ddxx12
=12x12
=12x
However, if you are uncomfortable applying the Power Rule to a fractional power, consider applying implicit differentiation to
y=x
y2=x
2ydydx=1
dydx=12y
=12x
