The average or mean slope of the function y=f(x) on an interval [ x 1 , x 2 ] is
y x = f ( x 2 ) f ( x 1 ) x 2 x 1
Here,
y = f ( x ) = x x + 2
And the interval is =[1,4]
Therefore,
f ( 1 ) = 1 1 + 2 = 1 3
f ( 4 ) = 4 4 + 2 = 4 6 = 2 3
So,
y x = f ( 4 ) f ( 1 ) 4 1 = 2 3 1 3 4 1 = 1 3 1 3 = 1 9
