The electromagnetic radiation is emitted by an atom when an inner shell vacancy is filled is called as characteristic X-ray. The X-ray radiations are emitted by an atom when it jumps from the higher state to lower state of energy.
For example when electron jumps from energy state 3 to ground state that is the X-ray radiations are emitted. There are various energy levels are present in the shells, so multiple characteristic X-rays are emitted in inner shell vacancies. This denotes the evidence for the characteristic X-rays being more energetic in the electromagnetic emission spectrum of the given element.
