The general term of a geometric sequence has the form:
a n = a r n - 1
where a is the initial term and r the common ratio.
In our example:
a 1 = 1250 and a 3 = 50
So:
r 2 = a r 2 a r 0 = a 3 a 1 = 50 1250 = 1 25 = 1 5 2
Hence:
r = ± 1 5
Then:
a 2 = a r 2 - 1 = 1250 ( ± 1 5 ) = ± 250
