2 x / a + y / b = 2 ( 1 ) x / a y / b = 4 ( 2 ) - - - - - multiply by 2
we get
2x / a - 2y / b = 8 - - - - - - - (3)
We now take equation (1) away (3)
2 x / a + y / b = 2 2 x / a 2 y / b = 8 3 y / b = 6 y / b = 2 y = 2 b
Now substituting the value of y in (1)
2 x / a + ( 2 b / b ) = 2 2 x / a 2 = 2 2 x / a = 4 x / a = 2 x = 2 a
Thus y = -2b and x = 2a
