Sound can only travel from one location to another through a tangible medium. In order for its particles to return to their original places after being displaced on either side, the medium must be elastic. Solids are more elastic than liquids and gases. In solids, liquids, and gases, sound waves move more quickly than they do in gases. Since there is no medium in a vacuum, sound waves cannot go across it. As a result, sound travels more quickly through solids than through gases.
