Why don't the electric field lines cross?

Two electric field directions would occur if electric field lines intersected at the crossing position, which is not practical. Lines of force never cross because if two lines intersect anyplace, drawing two tangents at that location reveals two orientations of the electric field, which isn't actually imaginable since there is only one direction at any given point.
