Due to its height above the ground and its rate of movement, a soaring bird has both kinetic and potential energy. If a bird has mass m and is moving at speed v, its KE is equal to 0.5 mv^2. If the bird is flying at a height h above the ground, its PE is equal to mgh, where g is the acceleration caused by gravity.
