Can displacement ever be greater than distance? If so, how?

Only if the motion is in a straight line will the displacement and distance for the motion of the same object, over the same time period, be equal. Distance would be greater than displacement if the motion was not linear. That is so because a straight line always connects any two points. That should still be the case.
