When we come in contact with anything that is colder than our body temperature, such as ice, we experience coldness. This is due to the fact that, in order to achieve thermal equilibrium between the body and the ice, the heat from our bodies, which is higher in quantity, flows to the ice through our skin (through thermal conduction). We feel chilly because of this heat loss and the absence of heat at that precise moment on our skin. Additionally, ice will begin melting as it absorbs heat energy from our bodies and changes from its solid state to a liquid condition. Heat always moves from a body that is warmer to a one that is cooler.
