A binomial distribution is a type of distribution with only two possible outcomes such that the two possible outcome can be categorized as
Success (p) - for the favorable outcome.
Failure (g) - the other possible outcome beside the favorable one.
The success outcome or failure outcome is not fixed depending on what is the favorable outcome in the situatio or study.
To determine if an experiment follows a binomial distribution, there are few criteria we need to consider:
The experiment has n identical independent trials.
Every outcome only has two possible outcome.
The probability of success is the same for each trial.
If the experiment satisfies the following stated criteria, then we can assume that the experiment is applicable to a binomial distribution.
Thus, a binomial distribution can be used for situations where the possible results are only win or lose, pass or fail, heads or tails, etc. such that the probability of either of the two results is the same per trials. A few examples of binomial distribution in real life are:
Tossinga fair coin (heads or tails)
Picking a lottery ticket (win or lose)
Effectiveness of a new drug (success or failure)
Running for election (win or lose)
