Researchers wanted to know about the alcohol drinking habits of high school students in the United States that vape. In order to do so, they randomly selected 10 high schools in the United States and then sampled all of the students from the school by asking them if they had ever vaped. Of the students that were surveyed, 67% said that they frequently vaped. a.)Does the 67% represent a statistic or a parameter? Explain your reasoning. b.) What type of sample was obtained? Population is the set of all objects of interest. Sample is s subset of the population.
It is not practically possible to study the entire population if the population is very large. In such situations a sample will be drawn from the population and inferences about the population is made. There are many method are there in statistics for sampling.
a) Statistic
Statistic is the numeric characteristic of the sample and parameter is the numeric characteristic of the population. So the numeric summaries or measures obtianed from the sample will be considered as statistic.
Here 67% is obtained from the sample students. So it is a numeric characteristic of the sample. Thus 67% is a statistic here.
b) Cluster sampling.
In cluster sampling, the whole population will be divided into clusters. Then a random sample of certain number of clusters will be selected and all the sampling unit of those clusters will be included in the sample.
Here the high school students of the entire nation is the sampling unit. So all the high schools of the country will be the clusters. Here a random sample of 10 high schools are selected and studied all the students of those high schools. This is the procedure for cluster sampling and hence cluster sampling is the sampling technique used here.
