We can use the F-test (Snedecor and Cochran, 1983) to test
H 0 : σ 1 2 = σ 2 2
versus
H A : σ 1 2 σ 2 2
The F statistics is obtained by F = σ 1 2 / σ 2 2 , with σ 1 2 σ 2 2 without loss of generality. In this case F=1.333.
We must compare this value with the critical value from the table F 1 α / 2 , N 1 1 , N 2 1 = F 0.975 , 45 , 37 = 1.88. The evaluated F is smaller than critical F, so you don't reject H 0 .

At the 0.01 level of significance the Z score is

(where p = ( x 1 + x 2 ) / ( n 1 + n 2 ) = 0.70 but sometimes a different formula p = ( p 1 + p 2 ) / 2 is also used)
Z = 2.90
Both tests indicate that there is evidence of a difference.
But you could also find the Z score using the standard deviation formula in the first method to be 2.993. Why are the Z scores different? Where do the formulas for finding the standard deviation come from?

Is there a simple test for uniform distributions?
I have a function that (more or less) is supposed to select a small number m of random numbers from the range [1,n] (for some n≫m) and I need to test that it work. Is there an easy to implement test that will give good confidence that it is working correctly? (For reference the full on chi squared test is not simple enough.)

m in [5,500], n is small enough I can use normal int/float types for most math.I can get as many sets as I'm willing to wait for (>100s per second)The reason I'm looking for something simple is that the code I'm checking isn't that complicated. If the test code is more complex than the code under test, then the potential for the test being wrong becomes a real problem.
Edit 2:
I took another look at Chi-squared and it's not as bad as I remembered... as long as I have a fixed number of buckets and a fixed significance threshold. (Or a canned CDF, and I don't think I do.)

As a businessperson, it is hard to share your results if your hypothesis testing does not reach a certain significance level. Make an argument why it is both good and bad to have to include this as part of your research results. Besides hypothesis testing, are there alternative ways to validate the research findings in a business environment?

Why do we still do symbolic math?
I just read that most practical problems (algebraic equations, differential equations) do not have a symbolic solution, but only a numerical one.
Numerical computations, to my understanding, never deal with irrational numbers, but only rational numbers.
Why do mathematicians construct the real numbers and go through the pain of using their complicated properties to develop real analysis, etc. to be able to solve just a few cases symbolically?
Why do non-mathematicians deal with real numbers and symbolic calculation if the majority of cases must use rationals and numerical computation only?
