A majorette in a parade is performing some acrobatic twirlingsof her baton. Assume that the baton is a uniform rod of mass 0.120 kg and length 80.0 cm.
With a skillful move, the majorette changes the rotation ofher baton so that now it is spinning about an axis passing throughits end at the same angular velocity 3.00 rad/s as before. What is the new angularmomentum of the rod?

Jane chooses a number X at random from the set of numbers
{1, 2, 3, 4}, so that
P(X = k) =
1
4
for k = 1, 2, 3, 4.
She then chooses a number Y at random from the subset of
numbers {X, ...,
4
}; for example, if
X = 3, then Y is chosen at
random from {
3,
4}
.
(i) Find the joint probability distribution of X and Y and display
it in the form of a two-way table.

(ii) Find the marginal probability distribution of Y , and hence
find E(Y ) and V ar(Y ).
[4 marks]
(iii) Show that Cov(X, Y ) = 5/8.

(iv) Find the probability distribution of U = X + Y . [7

Accuracy of confidence intervals
Suppose I have iid observations Xi (empirical mean Xn), drawn from a distribution with unknown mean μ and known variance σ2. To build a confidence interval for μ I can use the central limit theorem that states:

n ( X ¯ n μ ) σ N ( 0 , 1 )

and get the following approximation (if I am not mistaken), with ϕ being the quantile function of the standard normal distribution:

K P ( μ [ X ¯ n σ n ϕ 1 α 2 ; X ¯ n + σ n ϕ 1 α 2 ] ) 1 α

I've always been told to just provide this as an answer for an interval with 1α confidence level. But what about the real confidence level? It must be something like 1αϵn, right? What about ϵn?
