x 2 = ( 2 1 × 2 1 ) × ( 4 3 × 4 3 ) × × ( 1000 999 × 1000 999 ) ( 2 1 × 3 2 ) × ( 4 3 × 5 4 ) × × ( 1000 999 × 1001 1000 ) = 1001

Can ratios really be manipulated as fractions?
In high-school Maths, we were taught that it was possible to manipulate ratios as fractions. For example,
1 : 7 = 3 : x 1 7 = 3 x x 7 = 3 x = 3 × 7 x = 21
My question relates to the second line of working, where we represent 1 : 7 as 1 7 . As I understand it, 1 : 7 s better represented as one part of 8 total parts, i.e. 1 8 My question, then, is this:
Is there a simple way of showing (or better still, a rigorous proof!) that a ratio-equation of the form a : n = b : m can in all cases be rewritten as a n = b m ?

A population of bacteria is initially 6000. After three hours the population is 3000.
If this rate of decay continues, find the exponential function that represents the size of the bacteria population after t hours. Write your answer in the form f(t)=a(b)t.
Use either fractions, or decimals rounded to 4 places

Mental division of two fractions?
I've got a non-calc paper coming up, and when going through a test, this fraction came up:
8 0.4 8 ( 2 5 )
Going through the answers he says:
8 / 2 = 4
I then assume he did -(4*5) so:
8 ( 2 5 ) = 20
I can see what he's done, but I don't see what's happening mathematically?
