a. The seismic waves are caused by an earthquake or an explosion. These waves radiate energy that travels through the layers of the Earth.
b. P waves produce the initial group of waves that resemble an accordion. These waves produce compression and expansion as the rocks are pushed and pulled in the ground. S waves are the waves that can shake the ground by producing side to side and up and down movements within the rocks. Surface waves produce slower waves that have a side to side movements like a snake and an up and down movements like ocean waves.
с. P waves are the initial waves, whereas S waves arrive next to P waves. As soon as these two groups of waves reach the ыurface, they are turned into surface waves.
