If all the 76 coins were dimes, we would have $7.60
i.e. we have $12.40−$7.60=$4.80 or 480 cents extra
Each quarter would have 25−10=15 cents more
but we have 480 cents more
so we have 480 15 = 32 quarters
and 76−32=44 dimes.
Check - 44 dimes is 440 cents or $4.40 and 32 quarters are 32 × 25 = 800 cents or $8.00. Hence total $12.40
