We have to find the equation of line that contains the point (-1,1) and perpendicular to the line.
General equation of line is y = m x + c and then comparing to we have m=-3.
If two lines are perpendicular then
m 1 m 2 = 1
implies m 2 ( 3 ) = 1 m 2 = 1 3
slope of line perpendicular to the line is 1 3 , i.e, m 2 = 1 3
Equation of line is
y = m 2 x + c y = 1 3 x + c
Thus line passes through the point (-1,1)
1 = 1 3 ( 1 ) + C c = 4 3
Equation of line becomes
y = x 3 + 4 3 3 y = x + 4
The slope intercept form becomes
3 y x = 4 3 y 4 + x 4 = 1 y 4 / 3 + x 4 = 1
