The distance, r, between two points with coordinates ( x 1 , y 1 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 ) is given by
r = ( x 1 - x 2 ) 2 + ( y 1 - y 2 ) 2
It is an application of Pythagoras Theorem.
Therefore, the distance between (-3,-2) and (5,2) is
( - 3 - 5 ) 2 + ( - 2 - 2 ) 2 = 64 + 16
= 80
= 4 5
