Assume the two numbers are x and y.
x + y = 20
Rearrange to get:
x = 20 - y
Then use the second equation:
x - y = 48
Rearrange to get:
x = 48 + y
Then sub them into each other to get the formula:
20 - y = 48 + y
Solve:
2 y = - 28
y = - 14
Go back to your first rearranged equation and plug y in.
x = 20 - ( - 14 )
x = 34
Therefore, x and y are 34 and −14, respectively.
