let x be the distance driven at 50 mph
185-x be the distance driven at 55 mph
x 50 185 x 55 = 3.5
55x - 50(185-x) = 3.5(50)(55)
55x - 9250 + 50x = 9625
105x = 18875
x = 179.76 miles

two parts = x and y
so x+y=185
two times x/50+y/55=3.5
now you have to equations for 2 variables solve it
x = 185-y
(185-y)/50 + y/55 = 3.5 multiply all by 50 and by 55
10175 -55y + 50y =9625
550=5y
y=110
and x= 75 miles this is what you were looking for
