x= # of people who bought pennants
24-x = # of people that bought caps
x(1.25)+(24-x)1.5=34 all together they spent $34 multiply
1.25x+36-1.5x=34 combine terms
-.25x+36=34 move like to same side
-.25x=-2 divide both sides by -.25
x=8 24-x=16
8 bought pennants, 16 bought caps
