Solve the first equation (xy = 2) for y and we get:
y = (2/x)
Now substitute this into your second equation (3x - y + 5 = 0)and solve for x.
3 x 2 x + 5 = 0
3 x 2 x 2 x = 5
3 x 2 2 = 5 x
3 x 2 + 5 x 2 = 0
(3x-1)(x+2)=0
x = 2 , 1 3
Then use these x-values to solve for y using either given equation.
I am going to use equation 1 (xy = 2).
Using x = -2, we get that when x = -2,
-2y=2
y = 2 2
y=-1
and Using x = 1/3, we get that when x = 1/3,
1 3 y = 2
y = 2 3 1
y=6
