Parenting behavior refers to the process involving the birth of the child and the parent's behavior that assists in the survival and welfare of their child.
Ecological theories such as Belsky's theory mainly focus on the interaction between the child and environment especially parents. Belsky's model states that factors of parental personality and psychological well-being determine parenting functioning. When parental personality and psychological well-being when the function to promote sensitive child caring the parenting functioning are most protected and optimal parenting takes place. The absence of functioning of these factors affects parenting behavior.
Sociocultural theories like Vygotsky's theory suggest that learning is a social process in which the support of parents plays a significant role. Children learn through the zone of proximal development from more knowledgeable others (MKO) that are often are parents. The behavior of MKO is often influenced by their level of education, skills, social and economic support. The sociocultural theories help us in understanding that factors such as knowledge, mastery in skills, economic and support, play an important role in shaping parental behavior.
