Electromagnetic waves have all the properties of the well-known mechanical waves such as wavelength, frequency, amplitude, etc. However, they have one fundamental property that makes them unique in nature and that is that they do not need a medium to travel. They can travel in a vacuum, too. Another distinctive feature is polarization, ie. the can be polarized along different spatial directions.
Result:
Electromagnetic waves do not require a medium for propagation and they can be polarized.
