In a psychological research, Validity and Reliability are the concepts used to measure how well the method or technique measures something. They measures the quality of research.
Both validity and reliability are extensively used in the quantitative research, these are important to evaluate the research design, procedures and the results.
Validity: Validity is the extent to which the results accurately measures what it ought's to measure. If the validity is high then it indicates that the results are in accordance of variations and characteristics in the social and physical world.
If a test is valid the results are mostly reliable, but if the test isn't reliable than the chances are that the results are not valid either.
Example of validity: If you buy a packet of almonds and the net quantity of the packet is said to be 200 grams. The weighing machine at you home measures the weight of dry fruits accurately (200 grams) is said to have high validity.
Reliability: If a test measures the same results repeated over a period of time with the same method and conditions. It is said to be reliable. The consistency of results indicates high reliability.
If a test is reliable it is not necessary that it is valid, getting the same results repeatedly doesn't guarantee of it being valid as well. It could be an error.
Example of reliability: If you check the temperature of boiling water each day with the same thermometer and it shows the same results than it is said highly reliable.
