The domain of a function is all the given values of x, such that ananswer exists.
In the equation that was given y = 1 x , it is evident that any number that youplug in to x will give you an answer, except x=0. At x=0, there isno solution. There is no solution because you can not have afraction with a denominator of 0.
So the domain of this function, is all real numbers, with the exception of 0. The short hand for saying this is R-{0}. The Rstands for all reals. The minus sign means 'except for' and the brackets contain the numbers that you are excluding.
