1) ok you know one girl uses 3 times as much as the other so thatgives you 3x and other girl uses x amount. 2 yards arent used. thisgives you the equation
4x-2 = 20 solving for x gives you 4.5 yards because mary used 3 times as much she is 3x meaning 4.5 * 3 = 13.5 yrds Amy is x so she used 4.5 yards
2) the first car leaves at 45 mph. meaning in one hour is goes 45miles. the next car leave at 60 mph. the car going 60 has to catch up by 45 mile. the difference between the two is 15mph meaning car 2 gains 15miles per hour on car one. 45/15 is 3 hrs.

(1) Mary and Amy hada total of 20 yards of material from which to make costumes.
Mary used three times more material to make her costume than Amy used, and 2 yards of material was not used. How many yards of material did Amy use forher costume?
Mary = M and Amy = A
M + A = 20
3M - A = 2 +
4M= 22 => M =5.5 yards
5.5 + A = 20 => A = 14.5yards

45 t = 60 (t - 1)
45t = 60t - 60
15 t = 60 => t = 4hours
