P = number of pizzas sold
H = number of hamburgers sold
If the sold 40 more slices of pizza than hamburgers then we can write the equation as
P = 40+H
Then we know that their sales added to 292.50.
We also know that the price of each pizza was 0.75 cents andeach hamburger was 1.35
Now we can write our second equation:
0.75P + 1.35H = 292.50
Now plug equation 1 into equation 2 ( do you see the patternin these problems yet? =)
0.75 (40+H) + 1.35H = 292.50
Distribute
30 + 0.75H + 1.35 H = 292.50
30 + 2.1 H = 292.50
Now subtract 30 from both sides
2.1H = 292.50 -30
2.1H = 262.50
Then divide 2.1 by both sides
H = 125
So they sold 125 hamburgers
To find the number of pizzas sold we know that thenumber of pizzas = 60 + number of hamburgers = 60 + 125 = 185 pizzas
