In an hypothesis test first step is writing the hypothesis
In null hypothesis ( H o ) we define there is no statistical significance exists between two variables or if single variable is considered then it is equal to its mean.
In alternate hypothesis( H a ) we use a hypothesis which is contrary to null hypothesis. It say that their is significance relationship between two variables and in general the claim which we are testing is mentioned in alternate hypothesis.
hypothesis test can be one tail or two tail test. If <, > are mentioned in the alternate hypothesis then the critical region has only one side and it is considered as one tail test. If alternative hypothesis has symbol then the critical region has two sides and it is considered to be two tail test.
Model in hypothesis test:
First determne the level of significance and then determine which test is to be used according to the given conditions. Find the Critical score and also locate the rejection region in the data distribution.
Mechanics in Hypothesis testing:
We already know which test to perform from given conditions. Now calculate the test statistic and also its respective p value.
If it is one tail test then the p value remain same. If it is two tail test then the p value should be multiplied by 2, as it is two sided.
Conclusion in hypothesis testing:
In case of left one tail test:
If the p value is less than the level of significance or the test statistic is less than the critical value then we reject the null hypothesis. If the p value is greater than the level of significance or the test statistic is greater than critical value then we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
In case of right one tail test:
If the p value is less than the level of significance or the test statistic is greater than the critical value then we reject the null hypothesis. If the p value is greater than the level of significance or the test statistic is lower than critical value then we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
In case of two tail test in hypothesis test:
If the p value is less than the level of significance or the test statistic is not between the critical scores then we reject the null hypothesis. If the p value is greater than the level of significance or the test statistic is between the critical scores then wefail to reject the null hypothesis.
So based on the given information following these 4 steps, hypothesis test can be performed.
