What ever operation you perform on one side of the inequality you must balance it by performing the same operation on the other side of the inequality. In this case, substracting 5 to isolate n:
n + 5 - 5 < 11 - 5
n + ( 5 - 5 ) < 6
n + 0 < 6
n < 6
