As t = x + 2
Hence y = - t 2 + t + 1 can be written as y = - ( x + 2 ) 2 + x + 2 + 1
or y = - x 2 - 4 x - 4 + x + 2 + 1
or x 2 + 3 x + y + 1 = 0 which is the equation of a parabola.
