When a white light is passed (composed of visible photon frequencies) through hydrogen gas, it is found that certain frequencies are absent. The pattern formed by missing dark lines is termed as absorption spectrum. The missing frequencies are the ones that are observed in the corresponding emission spectrum.
The frequency of photons in emission spectrum of an element is directly proportional to the differences in energy of the stationary states.
Step 2
During absorption, the energy of incident photons is absorbed by the electrons in the ground state. The electrons move to higher energy state. The atoms remain in higher energy state for very short period of time and then returns to ground state by emitting a photon. Only Lyman series is observed in absorption spectra in ground state.
Atom releases energy and comes back to ground state or lower energy state, these emitted frequencies gives the emission spectrum. All the lines are present in emission spectrum Lyman, Paschen, and Brackett.
Thus, the lines that would be missing for hydrogen in an absorption spectrum is Lyman, Paschen and Brackett while no wavelengths are missing for hydrogen in an emission spectrum.
