Multiply both sides of the expression 1 x + 1 y = 1 z by the number x y z.
So you get x y z x + x y z y = x y z z , which is, after cancelling, equal to y z + x z = x y
Now, y z + x z = z ( x + y ) = x y
Divide z ( x + y ) = x y with ( x + y ) to obtain z = x y x + y .

Adding up the two fractions in the usual way leads to
1 x + 1 y = y x y + x x y = x + y x y .
Now solving x + y x y = 1 z gives us
z = x y x + y .
