Free energy is denoted by the energy free to do work in a system.
The various thermodynamic functions free energy is one of the most important thermodynamic functions.
There are two types of free energy discussed in thermodynamics. They are Gibbs free energy and Helmholtz's free energy
Free energy is basically the amount of energy available in the system which can be converted into work.
It is the amount of energy available to do work which is left after accounting for the heat that must be lost to the surroundings.
This is why free energy is "free.
