How can I write the
cos5(x)
as a sum of first order terms? I have started noticing that:
cos5(x)=cos4(x)cos(x)
and then:
cos4(x)=cos2(x)cos2(x)
Finally:
cos2(x)=12(1+cos(2x))
But I would like to find an easier formula, like the one for
cos2(x)

This is probably a little advanced, but a nice trick
cosx=12(eix+eix)
cos5x=(12)5(eix+eix)5
=(12)5(e5ix+5e4ixeix+10e3ixe2ix+10e2ixe3ix+5eixe4ix+e5ix)
Simplify
cos5x=(12)5(e5ix+e5ix+5(e3ix+e3ix)+10(eix+eix))
(12)4(cos5x+5cos3x+10cosx)
