Definition of measurement scale:
The measurement scale determines the kind of scale that measures the dependent variable.
All dependent variables cannot be measured on the same scale.
The qualities possessed by the variable under study defines the measurement scale.
There are 4 types of measurement scales. Namely,
1. Nominal
2. Ordinal
3. Interval
4. Ratio
Nominal:
A variable can be measured on the nominal scale if:
a. The data is qualitative with two or more groups.
b. These groups cannot be arranged in any natural order.
For instance:
Eye color: black, blue, brown etc.
Ordinal:
A variable can be measured on the ordinal scale if:
a. The data can be arranged in ascending or descending order.
b. The data is yes/no, true/false, or non-dichotomous type.
For instance:
The socioeconomic status.
Interval:
A variable can be measured on the interval scale if:
a. The data the assumes equal intervals.
For instance:
The Celsius temperature.
Ratio:
A variable can be measured on the ratio scale if:
a. The data the assumes equal intervals.
b. The data assuming zero value has no sense.
For instance:
The height of a person.
