For Questions 1 and 2, you will read an operational hypothesis. Identify the independent variable (IV), dependent variable (DV), and unit of analysis (UA). For each variable (IV and DV), indicate the appropriate level of measurement.
There is a relationship between political affiliation (on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 = very liberal and 10 = very conservative) and U.S. geographic regions, such that people living in the Northeast are more likely to consider themselves liberal than people living in the South.

Here we are given a hypothesis where we have to test the relation between the geographical location and political affiliation of people.
Independent variable: The variable which doesn't depend on other variables and function independently, here it is the Geographical location of people.
Dependent variable: Here, political affiliation is dependent on Geographical location, hence it is the dependent variable
Unit of Analysis: The unit of analysis is determined by the analysis that we do.
For example, here we are analysing hos geographic regions affects political affiliation, so here unit of analysis is not an individual but rather the US geographical units.
Level of measurement(IV)- The geographical regions can only be named, it is therefore NOMINAL.
Level of measurement(DV)- The political affiliation can be ordered, as in as we go from 1 through 10, we go from conservative to liberal. However, neither true mean nor distance can be measured.
Hence, it is an ORDINAL data.
